Review - Flat 3A

Flat 3A tells the story of Fiqah (Intan Ladyana), a factory worker who is pregnant. Anas (Adey Shafrien), the boyfriend, forces Fiqah to undergo abortion. After that, Fiqah is overwhelmed by guilt and remorse that she moved to another flat with her friend Ratna (Shasha).

Unknown to her, the house she's moving in was the base of a black magic shaman, Kang Suman (Zaidi Omar) and people there suspected Kang Suman was responsible for the disappearance of a little girl named Fatin.

Fiqah is then haunted by a little girl in the house, who she says looks like Fatin. But Ratna dismisses her claims because Fiqah is still traumatised.

Meanwhile, Fatin's mom (Kathy Azean) and uncle, Wahyu, who is an exorcist, carry on searching for her.

Yet another horror movie... this one's from Azhari Mohd Zain, who brought us Santau and Mantra. Flat 3A's slightly different from the other two, but still kinda the same... especially the whole shaman/bomoh theme... guess he really can't run away from those elements...

For me, this was an entertaining movie... not too scary, but it has its moments... unfortunately, the whole experience was marred by the storytelling... although I loved that the story had layers and it was told separately but was united at the end by one common thread... but there were things that did not work...

For example... Fiqah... where did she fit into all this... it was just too coincidental for her involvement in this... why was she haunted by Fatin? Why doesn't Fatin just haunt someone else into solving the mystery of her disappearance? Why did she show up at her mom's place that night and not the nights before? And why doesn't the people around the flat do something about her and Kang Suman's disappearance? Plus, dead body? Would've reeked right? The entire flat would've smelled like, well, rotting flesh...

Anyway, even after all that, I still liked this movie... mostly because how every character and storylines eventually link to one another... it's like an onion, multilayered and delicious... hehe...

Acting-wise... not too bad... I've never really liked Intan Ladyana coz she was not too good an actress plus her voice is a bit too shrill... but she was not bad in this movie... suited her... Ery Zukhairi and Adey Shafrien looked like they could be twins or brothers... faces are too similar... they did not do a bad job but kinda stiff in a couple of scenes...

All in all, enjoyable... not too bad...

Review - Cun!

Maya Karin. One of the best working actresses we have today. So when my colleague said that there was a preview/premiere for a movie called Cun!, I was not really into it. But when he said it was Maya Karin, I jumped at the chance to go see it.

I am so glad I did. No, I did not get to meet Maya or any of the other stars of the movie. But I did spot some of them (Farid Kamil, Fimie Don, Kartina Aziz, Lisa Surihani etc) while seated in the cinema hall. The reason I am glad... is because the movie was a nice distraction and of course, I got to meet and chat with one of the most famous blogger in KL... I am not worthy... ahahha...

Anyway, so Cun! tells the story of Luna Latisya (Maya Karin), the host of a trashy tabloid gossip TV show, getting her comeuppance when she caught her actor boyfriend cheating on her. She packed up her life and went away to the countryside to lick her wounds. There she meets Atan (Remy Ishak), a simple kampung boy who is the complete opposite of her world in KL. Meanwhile, her TV show crew plots to get her back in the spotlight...

Story-wise, it's a simple romantic comedy plot... but this one is peppered with strongly written characters, or at least, interesting characters... supporting characters anyway... even the buffalo plays an integral role... and the funny are quite spontaneous and kinda not scripted, for the most part... so that is always a pleasant plus... and for a lighthearted comedy, it tugs on your heartstrings really powerfully too...

As usual, Maya Karin is a delight to watch... haven't really seen much of Remy Ishak movies before this, but I guess I am gonna have to start coz he was quite good here... comic timing and all... the supporting cast was also good... especially Ning Baizura, who is deliciously over the top as the Cruella-inspired producer... ordinarily, I would've been turned off by the characterization but Ning makes it work... you're supposed to find her annoyingly bitchy... hehe...

Okay, now for the not so good stuff... the movie is of course predictable... even before watching, you know that they're gonna fall in love... guess the happy ending is what counts... wish they'd try a different approach for once... like Jennifer Aniston's The Break Up... they did not end up together, and the movie left it all up to the imagination... which of course we know they'd hook up later...

And why must a few scenes in the movie be so loud? Everybody's screaming at once or talking at once... and there was quite a handful of scenes like this... gets annoying...

Other than that, it was a lovely experience, especially after the disappointing showing the previous night...

Review - 2 Alam

I have missed quite a few Malay movies lately... either I was too busy to go see it or from a lack of interest... normally, I'd go to a preview but I haven't been to one in quite a while...

Anyway, I've heard so much negative review about this movie, I had to go see it... actually I wanted to see this movie originally because of the interesting premise of the movie, this one and Anu Dalam Botol...

This week I was at RTM for a course on copywriting so everyday I'd drop by Midvalley, which was a stone's throw away...

I was lucky enough to get a ticket for the 5pm show... lucky not because it was selling out, because it was I had arrived in time for the 5pm show instead of waiting for the 7pm show... and yes, it was not filled to the brim with people... exactly 6 people in there... 5 if you don't count the one walking out in the middle of the movie...

Okay, so I heard the movie's about a guy who had surgery done on him to turn into a woman and then he/she died and the family has issues on how to deal with her death and burial because she was born a he... interesting yes?

But this movie barely touch on the subject matter... in fact they just skimmed the surface of the subject and choose to focus on how he/she was living in sin and how the earth refused to take her after her death because he/she was too sinful...

And that is one of the things I had problems with... the movie itself was sorely lacking... it felt like watching an extended music video, ya know, where the singer's acting out the song in a movie type fashion and it would stop the song every once in a while for the artist to act out a scene... yup, this movie feels like that... or a like a cheap karaoke video...

I heard that the first director quit so the second director had to take over... my guess is there was not enough footage from either director to make one cohesive movie so they decided to cut and paste the entire movie by recycling shots from previous scenes...

What's the point of all those musical montages? They did not add anything to the storyline... oh, wait, I take it back... they add annoyance to the movie-watching experience... and what's with the constant playing of the theme songs? I swear to God it's like an extended video of Amy Search... Salam Terakhir has been soiled by this movie... the song will never be the same again... sigh...

There were plenty of plotholes as well... like how exactly did the funeral was relatively media free? Where were the papparazi? She's supposed to be this hugely famous singer right? And then before she died, her big secret was exposed. You'd think the media would be all over her. And when her guy wanted to marry her, she said that he would have to get circumcised. Dude, seriously? Legally, you're still a guy in Malaysia. You can't get married.

And why did she stick around for so long before running away when the thugs were fighting who gets to do her first? And when she finally grow some balls (hahaha, geddit?) to fight and run, the thugs still bickered but you can see her in the background sashaying away...

Sigh. But that's just me nitpicking...

Acting-wise, not a single one of them was impressive. Except maybe the mother whose name eludes me till now. But then again, all the mother had to do was look sad and cry. Everybody else was basically stoic and wooden. Aaron Aziz's character should have more expressions since his childhood friend who snipped off his penis had died. But the ustaz was emotion-less, even when the earth rejected his/her body.

Then, there was this issue with the music. No, not the Salam Terakhir or that Ramli Sarip song. The soundtrack and background music. It was too eerie and a bit frightening for a non-horror movie. I kept expecting to see an entity jump out and scare the living daylights out of the six of us. Like the scene of the 'mandi mayat'... the shot showed the people doing it and then slowly move to the floorboards below them and show the water trickling down. I suppose they thought it was incredibly clever of them to then cut to a scene of Amy showering but with that damned music, you'd expect to see a Hantu Penanggal or something like that to be licking the water that's trickling to the ground... if they made this into a horror movie, I think it'd be a better movie... the soundtrack has the perfect ambience to scare people...

Overall, this movie stinks so bad that it made Lu Pikirlah Sendiri The Movie Oscar-worthy... yes, I hate this vile excuse for a movie... if there's a Razzie Award in Malaysia, this movie will dominate! I used to think Razak Mohaideen was a poison to Malaysia's movie industry but now we have a new face as The Poison... Dr Rozmey, come on up and accept your award!

Oh, just so you know... 2Alam is close to collecting the RM40 million that Dr Rozmey's been screeching in his bought advertorials and to anyone who'd listen... about 39.77 million to go...

Review - The Other Guys

Had the hardest time trying to figure out what to write. Even contemplated not going at one point. Yup, that was how hard the topic was... anyway, finally got down to it and this is the product of it --> http://moviewritings.blogspot.com/2010/09/other-guys-preview-screening-by-sony.html

Hopefully it would be good enough to get me tickets... and I got the email like Monday nite from Jason, telling me I got the tickets. Yay!

So I set out looking for a friend to go with me to the preview. Was quite hard. Not a lot of people were available and/or free to go. In the end, my colleague saved the day and we went to Midvalley together. Had dinner at Sushi King. It's RM2 per plate week! Yum!

Okay, so the movie... I had very low expectations of the movie. Mostly because of Will Ferrell. He is not funny to me. Quite annoying. In most of his movies.

But it turned out quite well. Will Ferrell was not annoying. Much. But the movie's quite good, with some crazy one-liners and pop culture references. It's not as fast-paced as a cop movie but since the title is The Other Guys, so it was okay that the movie was not rock 'em sock 'em blow 'em up style.

However, Mark Wahlberg was being the annoying one. God, he was overacting a bit. Now I see what people were talking about. That he does overact here and there. His face was in a constant state of "I'm constipated". Reminds me of The Happening... sigh...

On a different note, it's nice to see Vince from Will & Grace and also Michael Keaton. Looks so aged... nice supporting with the funny TLC references...

Oh, forgot to mention... when I was queueing up to get the tickets, they told me I won something, like the last time... I won Nightmare on Elm Street t-shirt... I was excited... but then, he said I did not win anything... April Fool's came a bit too early... :(

But then, after the movie's finished, Josh from Advertlets got up and presented the winning blog posts with presents... I was not bitter, I kinda had to pee... but then I heard my name called! What the... woah... hehehhe... this is what I got:

The Other Guys Preview Screening by Sony Pictures and Advertlets

I have been thinking really hard about this. How do outcasts stand out? By definition alone, they should not stand out. Not really anyway. People notice outcasts but choose to not acknowledge them.

But lately, you can see that outcasts or the other guys have been standing out.

The best example I could think of... are from the movies or TV series. More and more shows now are made with nerds and geeks either as the lead or as one of the sidekicks. Chuck, The Big Bang Theory and countless cop shows like CSI or Bones. They all feature one outcast or another and they all play important roles to the storylines.

I have to admit that I am one of those nerds. Shy wallflower types that nobody would notice. Yup, I am sooooo The Other Guys. If the normal guys aren't around or busy, then only I'd come into the picture. Socially or at work, it's all the same.

But this ain't a pity party. I am okay with it. Some people are not that nice anyway. Hehehe.

Lately though, I have been singled out a lot. Like somehow I've stood out amongst the outcasts. Am not sure how, but people found out about my blogs. Okay, so I put my blogs at my facebook profile. How was I supposed to know people would read...

So now, this wallflower who used to coast on by without so much of a whimper... is a copywriter at work... thanks to his nerdy skills... and people come up to me with a lot of questions and asking help with scripts and stuff...

Don't get me wrong. I am still one of The Other Guys for sure... nobody bothers to include me in any of their plans... but they'd wanna join me for whatever it is that I am up to... weird eh?

Anyway, guess that's one of the advantages of being The Other Guys. You're kinda free to do whatever you want, however you want it, whenever you want it. You are not confined to other people's time, or interests or quirks.

And for the most part, people still leave you alone, which is exactly what I like. I mean, you can go off without people asking for you or wondering where you've gone off to.

For me, that's the best part of being one who doesn't fit in or an outcast.

And no, I am not gonna go all 'Carrie' on you normal folks at the preview... :)

Review - Going the Distance

I haven't even heard of this movie until an ex-colleague of mine asked me to accompany her for a sneak preview. Boy, it was soooo sneaky that there were only a handful of people in the cinema hall. Like 10 people... which was good coz we were seated so far away that we could sit comfortably... hehehe...

Anyways, I have always liked Drew Barrymore so I thought why not... plus, Justin Long and Barrymore have been the talk of the town in regards to their relationship... whether it's on or it's off...

Either way, this movie is a romantic comedy about two people who met and got it on famously... but the problem is the girl's leaving to the other side of the country.

It's a nice enough movie. The two leads have excellent chemistry together and the acting was not too bad.

Drew Barrymore's forte is lightweight comedies so she's pretty good here. Justin Long is also good as the guy who has to deal with the long distance relationship. He sidestepped his normal roles AKA quirky and annoying and made the guy somewhat likeable. The scene when he had to make a difficult decision was kinda heartbreaking. Proves how good he actually is...

They're supported by a few interesting and hilarious characters. Guess that's the norm when it comes to quirky romantic comedies. The wacky sidekicks.

Christina Applegate is especially hilarious and the tough as nails and no nonsense older sister. She's excelling in this kind of role, especially after carving out a name for herself in Samantha Who? and her Emmy winning scene stealing role as Rachel's sister on FRIENDS.

Breaking Dawn

A Nightmare On Elm Street

Yesterday, a colleague and me went to see this movie...

Yup, the infamous Freddy Krueger in a modern retelling of the slasher flick, brought to us by Advertlets...

Held at GSC Midvalley (along with other media (Cinema Online, The Star etc) screenings)

We got there quite early. We left the office at about 7.15. We got to Midvalley at 7.30. Nice eh?

So we went straight to GSC to check out the thingy. There was already a long line but when investigated upon, it turned out to be the lines for Cinema Online. So I looked around and saw the Advertlets booth, closer to the concession stand. Unfortunately, it was empty. We're early. So we decided to go for dinner first.

So close to 8 o'clock, I made a dash to GSC, leaving my colleague still scarfing down sushi... *envious*

Finally, there are people there... I had thought that maybe we missed the ticket redemption time... *phew*

There were only a few people in front of me but the waiting took almost forever. Come on people! Move it! The sushi ain't gonna wait for me! Sigh...

When I get closer to the front, I found out what the delay was... some people were negotiating to sit together with their other friends while some of them were negotiating about tickets? I did not really get the gist of that conversation coz I was fuming mad (and hungry). One more minute of waiting and I'd throw a hissy fit right there and then. Luckily, I did not have to wait another minute. I told the Advertlets guys my name and they said my blog name, even without looking at the list. Wow! That was a nice feeling. So I was not mad anymore. Hehhehe...

Then she (didn't catch her name) told me I'd won a t-shirt! Yay! But they said they'd give it to me in the screening hall... okay I guess... so the other guy (also did not get his name) asked me if I wanted A or B... woah, that's like the back of the hall... cool beans... I asked for A... of course...

Then I rushed back to Sushi King, where my colleague has eaten half of the Kaiten Belt... but I was too excited/nervous/giddy from finding out I won something and that people knows of me/my blog and that I got nice seats so I only ate a couple of plates more and we were gone...

Wow, this post is getting to be long... maybe I should keep the review short...

Freddy Krueger was a childhood nightmare, so to speak... this new Freddy isn't as scary or creepy as the original Freddy but the new Freddy has a malevolent aura that the old Freddy doesn't... this one made Robert Englund's Freddy looked a bit campy... huhuhu...

Not much to say about the storylines... ya know, kids sleep, meet Freddy, scream lungs out, slashing, dead... the usual...

But I gotta say the movie is creepy and quite suspenseful... not really scary as we've seen the movie/villain before but nice nonetheless...

Now, I don't exactly remember the original movie since it was years ago since I last saw it and I'd imagine there were a few tweaks here and there that are a bit different... I think...

And of course, the movie had to end on a cliffhanger... which we knew was coming but overall, I'd say good effort indeed :)

Dragon

'How To Train Your Dragon' is a Dreamworks release, set in the world of vikings and of course, Dragons, adapted from the book by Cressida Cowell.


There's so many types of dragons in this movie. The central dragon is called the Night Fury, a dark dragon whose main abilities are stealth flight and also highly concentrated fireballs.

The main human character is called Hiccup, a scrawny little kid, who is also the town leader's son.

The island the Vikings live in is constantly under siege by dragons and they'd fly off with the livestock.

During one of the sieges, Hiccup unleashes a weapon he made, which lets loose bolas to snag the dragon mid-flight.

However, when Hiccup manages to track down the dragon, he could not kill. He lets the dragon, the Night Fury, go. Thus a friendship between them begins and Hiccup realizes the dragons are not actually their enemies.

Unfortunately, the other humans on the island still needed to be convinced.



It's a fairly decent outing from Dreamworks. Not anywhere near the quality of Pixar's outings though but it made for a good fun watch. The dragons are made into fun and cute creatures and watch out for a very funny performance by one of the village's livestock. :)

Watching Movies

It's the macho guys sporting wings week... both Legion and Tooth Fairy has a winged male lead... and the posters are shown side by side at GSC... marketing ploy or just a random coincidence?


Anyway, the two winged movies are on complete opposite of the spectrum. One's a heavy movie filled with religion, prophecy and doom while the other one is filled with comedy and gags.





I saw this movie on Thursday. At GSC Pavilion. It's not exactly groundbreaking but it's a pretty decent outing. Cool angel fight scene and cool wings effect.

The storyline goes like this. God lost faith in mankind and is sending an army of angels to get rid of humans (AKA the legion in the title). The last time God lost faith in mankind, he sent down a massive flood.

However, humanity has a glimmer of hope in the form of an unborn baby. An angel was dispatched to get rid of the baby but he refused to cooperate and sided with the humans. He got them prepared for the coming onslaught.

The movie starred Paul Bettany as the fallen angel Michael, Dennis Quaid, Kate Walsh and Adrienne Palicki as the girl carrying humanity's hope.

It's a little too Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight for me. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. :)


The Rock in a comedy? Is this his second attempt at it after The Game Plan?

Anyways, Dwayne Johnson plays Derek Thompson, a hockey player who's disillusioned enough and cynical enough to go and break kids' spirits and dreams.

So the higher-ups decided to punish him by having him serve as a tooth fairy. That's when the funny bits start...

I have to say that The Rock can do comedy quite well.

It's always nice to see Julie Andrews in a movie. So regal. :)

Sober and sweet-mannered Taufik does not believe in romance and says that he will marry the girl of his parents’ choice when the time comes. For ladies’ man Jeffri, there are many fishes in the sea and thinks that love and marriage are only forms of captivity. Comic and naïve Sam believes in love-at-first-sight, and hopes to meet the love of his life on the island.

Fate however, brings three young women into the lives of the youths. Sam chances upon pretty and chirpy village lass, Sofia seated at the window of a kampung house and decides that she is the love of his life. Synopsis: "Vettaikaran" is an action film starring Vijay and Anushka. The film is said to have the usual commercial elements of any Vijay film and similar to his previous hit "Thirupachi". Vijay plays the role of an Auto driver and Anushka plays a medical student as his love interest.

Watching Movies

Yesterday, I went to Times Square (and braved the KL jam) to catch Zombieland... which was good, according to the ticket guy at GSC...

And he was right... it was a rockin' good time! They did not really bother explaining the cause of the zombie plague... the movie just dove straight into the story...

It was told from the point of view of Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), a nerdy, thin guy who had survived the zombies by sticking to his rules and on his way back to his home town, hoping that his family was still alive.

Along the way, he met Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), a crazy guy who loves killing zombies way too much and two sisters (Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin) who is still conning, even after humans are almost extinct. The two girls are heading to Pacific Playland in California, supposedly clear of the zombie threat.


That's basically the story. There's no searching for cure or survivors. Or trying to find someone with the key to ending the zombie menace. Nothing like that at all. Just four people trying to survive and heading to California. And killing zombies getting in the way.

This movie reminded me of a lot of monster movies such as:

Planet Terror,

28 Days Later (and 28 Weeks Later)

and of course, the Resident Evil films...

and definitely not this film...

But more closely resembles Planet Terror than the rest because Planet Terror has a dark comedic influence to it. However, Zombieland is a lot more comedic than Planet Terror.

Overall, it's a fun ride and the actors are quite good. Woody Harrelson has always been a joy to watch, ever since Cheers. Jesse Eisenberg plays nerdy to perfection, as evident in Cursed. Abigail Breslin is of course an Oscar nominee for Little Miss Sunshine. Emma Stone is good as well but I can't for the life of me, think of her other movies. She looks like Mila Kunis though, in Max Payne.

Anyway, Zombieland is a good movie to watch to relax, unwind and laugh... on a side note, the censorship is not too bad with this movie... sometimes, a couple of 'F' words go through... :)

Tonite... watching The Storm Warriors at Pavilion...

Looks like there's nothing to shout about this week... well, everybody's probably still going for New Moon or 2012 or Astro Boy... if I have to choose, I think I'll go and see My Spy. Afdlin Shauki's shaping up to be a worthy filmmaker as of lately... oh, and maybe Love Happens since I love Jennifer Aniston... :)

Review - Planet 51

Over the Raya break, I went back to hometown... the qurban activity was scheduled for Saturday so I decided to go out with them kids to the mall and watch a movie. They wanted to watch 2012 or Astro Boy but I've seen them already.

They haven't seen New Moon but haven't seen Twilight as well... so Planet 51 is the only other option left. We went to East Coast Mall, which has a GSC there... which happens to be my fave cineplex...

Planet 51... Area 51... Get it?

The movie starts out showing a couple getting attacked by aliens. It turned out to be a movie that people are watching. But in fact, these people are aliens... um, guess in their own planet, they would not be considered aliens huh?

Anyway, as with our people, some of them are obsessed with aliens and alien invasions...

One day, an actual alien came down to their planet... only it's not an alien... it's a human... okay, alien to them I guess... so pandemonium erupted and everybody panicked... etc etc etc...

Except for Lem, the main character, who befriended the human and wants to help him go back to his spaceship so that he could return home...

There is also a cute robot who acts like a dog... called Rover, who has an obsession with rocks... I think he was modelled after Wall-E...

Anyway, the movie's entertaining enough... some of the jokes are adult-oriented... the kids did not get it while I was laughing out loud... most animations are like that... the kids only saw pretty fish while we laugh like crazy for the jokes in Finding Nemo...

A decent enough movie to take the kids to during the school holidays... :)
