Oscar Noms Scorecard

Let's see how I stack up...

Best Picture:
The King's Speech
The Social Network
Inception
Black Swan
True Grit
127 Hours
Blue Valentine
Toy Story 3
The Kids Are All Right
The Fighter

Missed out Winter's Bone... had a sneaking suspicion that Blue Valentine would be nominated, oh well...

Best Actor:
Colin Firth, The King's Speech
Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network
James Franco, 127 Hours
Ryan Gosling, Blue Valentine
Jeff Bridges, True Grit

Missed out on Javier Bardem in "Biutiful"... coz I was predicting Blue Valentine for Best Picture and Michelle Williams for Best Actress so maybe Ryan Gosling would also get the nomination...

Best Actress:
Natalie Portman, Black Swan
Annette Bening, The Kids Are All Right
Jennifer Lawrence, Winter's Bone
Michelle Williams, Blue Valentine
Julianne Moore, The Kids Are All Right

I really thought Julianne Moore had a shot at a nomination... but it was Nicole Kidman who got it for Rabbit Hole...

Best Supporting Actor:
Christian Bale, The Fighter
Geoffrey Rush, The King's Speech
Andrew Garfield, The Social Network
John Hawkes, Winter's Bone
Mark Ruffalo, The Kids Are All Right

Jeremy Renner (The Town) pushed my fave out of the running... dammit...

Best Supporting Actress:
Melissa Leo, The Fighter
Amy Adams, The Fighter
Hailee Steinfeld, True Grit
Helena Bonham Carter, The King's Speech
Jacki Weaver, Animal Kingdom

Five for five... yay me!

Best Director:
David Fincher, The Social Network
Christopher Nolan, Inception
Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan
Tom Hooper, The King's Speech
David O Russell, The Fighter

True Grit's Coen Brothers upset Inception's Christopher Nolan... sigh...

Hmm... guess I did not predict the Best Animated Picture category... but I would've chosen Tangled over The Illusionist...

Check out this guy's prediction -->http://thefilmexperience.net/prediction-index/

Next question... who do we pick as winners?

Anticipated

Upcoming movies that are hotly anticipated...

Thor (May 6)

Chris Hemsworth as Thor

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (May 20)

Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom won't be appearing in the fourth installment...
Penelope Cruz has been added to the cast...

Transformers: Dark of the Moon (July 1)

Megan Fox won't be running around in skimpy outfits anymore... Rose Huntington-Whiteley is her replacement and judging from the photo, they are not looking to make her into a sexpot... we'll see...

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (July 15)

Cowboys & Aliens (July 29)

Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol (December 16)

Bear in mind that these dates are US release dates... dunno when Malaysia is gonna get them... but if they are blockbuster movies, then we'd get em at the same time too...

Casting - Villainesses

Two superhero movies have released news about their villainesses. The new Batman by Christopher Nolan and X-Men: First Class.

It seems the third movie from the relaunched series will feature Selina Kyle AKA Catwoman, played famously by:

Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns

Or infamously by Halle Berry, although Halle's Patience Price/Catwoman was not in a Batman movie, but rather her own Catwoman movie...
The new catwoman will be Anne Hathaway of the Princess Diaries and The Devil Wears Prada fame...

http://blog.movies.yahoo.com/blog/435-anne-hathaway-is-your-new-catwoman

Next up, is Mystique from X-Men...

not exactly casting news, but photos of Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone) as Mystique has surfaced...

Mystique was famously played by Rebecca Romijn in all three X movies...

Jennifer Lawrence as the young Raven Darkholme...

Review - Khurafat

The first Malay horror movie of 2011. The first one I watched anyway. Wait, it is the first Malay horror movie. In fact, it is the first Malay movie of 2011. Damping Malam and Janin both came out end December last year.

One of the reasons why I wanted to catch this movie, other than the fact that I am a horror movie buff... is Liyana Jasmay... something about her... I very much like... her and Lisa Surihani are the two actresses that I would go see in the cinema... Liyana Jasmay was in Histeria, a very good Malay horror movie... and of course I was kinda intrigued with Shamsul Yusuf after his directing win at the last FFM...

So the story goes like this... Johan (Shamsul Yusuf) and Aishah (Liyana Jasmay) came back to Johan's hometown to visit his sick mother. During which, one villager died due to his usage of the black arts, which Johan witnessed. The death itself. The night before they left for KL, both of them got haunted.

Meanwhile, back in KL, Johan's ex-girlfriend Anna, who can't get over Johan marrying someone else and is hell bent on getting Johan back, one way or another.

Once the newly-weds are in KL, the haunting started to escalate...

Pretty nifty story here. There are a couple of red herrings in the plot. Actually three. Which served to mislead us until the final revelation. I could not figure out, for the life of me, what the twist was. Actually, I knew there was a twist somewhere and that one of the misleading subplots is in fact misleading. So I guess this movie manages to keep the red herrings intact and distract me from figuring out the movie until after the revelation occurred.

So good job to Syamsul Yusuf for weaving an intricate and kinda complex storylines together. Using the makcik for expositionary purposes? Quite nice. I'd expected him to go to the Imam.

The dialogue was not bad. It's quite natural and real, like us normal folks talking, especially the scenes between Johan and his friend from the hospital.

Acting-wise, the movie's pretty solid. Liyana Jasmay, FFM Best Actress for Papadom, sleepwalks through the movie as her role is not exactly a challenge. Syamsul Yusuf was not bad, although at times, he may seem a bit wooden and stoic but that maybe how the character was written. His crying scenes were pretty good. Sabrina Ali, playing the crazy ex Anna, is also pretty good but I wish she (and indirectly Syamsul as the director) would make Anna out to be a little more subtle. Subtle crazy is far scarier than freaky crazy.

Other than that, it was an enjoyable horror movie. Oh wait, scratch that horror part. It was an enjoyable movie. The usage of loud music to shock us was minimal. There are several scenes where the ghost would show up but there was no music to set the mood. It was silence and then, bam! Girly Ghost in your face! Hahha...

Looking forward to the next horror movie from him... if he is doing another horror...

BAFTA

Ricky Gervais

Did not catch the show yesterday because of work... so today am scouring the Internet for clips... here's one of the host, Ricky Gervais... some bits are funny, but then again it depends on the person he is mocking, whether they feel it's okay or not... take a look...

Best of 2010

I am a movie buff/freak... a buffy movie freak? or a freaky movie buff? hihi... anyways, I watch a lot of movies and I am one of those who like all kinds of movies and would normally enjoy all kinds of movie experiences, unless they are total and complete piece of crap *cough* 2Alam *cough*... so this is a list of the movies I enjoyed most and remembered and would likely to buy the DVD and watch it again and again...
So without further ado... the 10 best movies watched in the cinema in 2010...
Ryan Reynolds, who is normally linked to romance fluff and action movies, did a solid in this one. The movie itself was interesting in its premise and execution...

M Night Shyamalan's redemption after the god-awful The Last Airbender. Again, this movie employed the same claustraphobic element like Buried, but there are other things happening outside of the elevator. Very thrilling and kinda scary...

Two of the funniest actors on TV joining forces for a movie? Sounds great. And the end product was awesomely funny, like one of the episodes of 30 Rock. Tina Fey has always been a goddess to me. Don't like Steve Carell though...

By far, the best of the series, which is a good sign for Part 2 I guess. Story-wise, nothing much has changed, except this movie spends a lot of its time elsewhere ie not in Hogwarts, which I guess is the thrilling part of the movie. The kids are all grown up but they're still kids...

It made you think... and it was utterly original... unlike the sequels, prequels, remakes and revamps that inundated us, especially in the summer... the all-star cast helped...

Some people might be turned off by this movie but I found it to be awesome! Especially Chloe Grace Moretz in a career-defining role as the foul-mouthed kick-ass girl...

Another Chloe Moretz movie... this remake was indeed prettier but it was a bit more solemn and dark too... very nice scares plus the cute romance between the kids...

Will Ferrell normally irritates me and Mark Wahlberg tends to do some overacting, especially after he got his Oscar nomination... what's up with that? Anyway, this movie worked well... funny at times and cute... did I mention funny?

Finally, a movie based on true events that happened in our generation! The Social Network is not just a fluff piece about how Facebook came about. It's very real and human and a good piece of dramatic cinema. Gave us great performances, especially from Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield.

Another Leo DiCaprio movie. This time he reteams with Martin Scorsese and produced another gem. All-star cast too. Quite nice, the mystery and the drama.

Casting - The Hobbit

Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis and Elijah Wood has signed on the dotted line for The Hobbit... and as previously announced, so did Cate Blanchett...

It's like LOTR reunion with Gandalf, Gollum, Frodo and Galadriel... btw, that poster is fan-made I think from comicbookmovie.com

Review - Paranormal Activity 2

After the success of the first movie (and the initial success of The Blair Witch Project), this movie had to be greenlit of course... and there's even a third one on the way already...

Part 2 tells the story of Kristi, Katie's sister... ya know, Katie from the first movie... and Part 2 is more like a prequel that parallel's the first movie's timeline but actually started before the events of the first movie started, hence Katie and Micah (who we all know, had died from the first movie) can make appearances...

This movie also explains a bit more of what was happening and why it was happening... basically, Kristi gave birth to a son and was now experiencing the same horror and trauma that befell Katie...

I like this movie and the horror/scare factor from the first movie was utilized well here... unfortunately, they took their time to set up the scary and it was kinda boring actually to wait... unless this was the first movie... then the build up is kinda nice... but since Paranormal Activity had set up the chill factor and most of us has seen it, the wait was not a good thing...

And they were following the first movie's formula to a T... the woman gets harassed by a supernatural thing and the man is the disbeliever... which was a bit annoying at that point...

Apparently, there were multiple versions of the ending of the first movie... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paranormal_Activity#Alternative_versions

The version I saw on DVD was the one with the 'They All Die' ending... but when it was shown in America, Katie had survived... when I saw this movie, in my mind, Katie had perished and the thing that showed up at Kristi's was the demon... hence the brutal murders in a not humanly possible way happened...

I wonder how they're gonna do Part 3...
